FGF family of growth factors have been shown to regulate cell growth, survival, migration and differentiation. Through these abilities, FGFs induce and/or direct patterning in animal development and regeneration. Pleiotropic effects of FGFs are executed by activation of specific membrane receptors. In order to gain insights into the role of FGF signaling during teleost fin regeneration, we undertook the study of the expression of the four described FGF receptors (FGFRs). Preliminary results are presented, showing different patterns of immunoreactivity for each receptor during outgrowth regeneration stages, that are suggestive of particular functions for each of them.

Fgf and Sdf-1 Pathways Interact during Zebrafish Fin Regeneration

The chemokine stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF1) was originally identified as a pre-B cell stimulatory factor but has been recently implicated in several other key steps in differentiation and morphogenesis. In addition, SDF1 as well as FGF signalling pathways have recently been shown to be involved in the control of epimorphic regeneration. In this report, we address the question of a possib...

Fgf-dependent depletion of microRNA-133 promotes appendage regeneration in zebrafish.

Appendage regeneration is defined by rapid changes in gene expression that achieve dramatic developmental effects, suggesting involvement of microRNAs (miRNAs). Here, we find dynamic regulation of many miRNAs during zebrafish fin regeneration. In particular, miR-133 levels are high in uninjured fins but low during regeneration. When regeneration was blocked by Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) rec...

Fgf signaling instructs position-dependent growth rate during zebrafish fin regeneration.

During appendage regeneration in urodeles and teleosts, tissue replacement is precisely regulated such that only the appropriate structures are recovered, a phenomenon referred to as positional memory. It is believed that there exists, or is quickly established after amputation, a dynamic gradient of positional information along the proximodistal (PD) axis of the appendage that assigns region-s...

Differential induction of four msx homeobox genes during fin development and regeneration in zebrafish.

To study the genetic regulation of growth control and pattern formation during fin development and regeneration, we have analysed the expression of four homeobox genes, msxA, msxB, msxC and msxD in zebrafish fins. The median fin fold, which gives rise to the unpaired fins, expresses these four msx genes during development. Transcripts of the genes are also present in cells of the presumptive pe...

Dynamic remodeling of the extra cellular matrix during zebrafish fin regeneration.

Extracellular matrix plays a dynamic role during the process of wound healing, embryogenesis and tissue regeneration. Caudal fin regeneration in zebrafish is an excellent model to study tissue and skeletal regeneration. We have analyzed the expression pattern of some of the well characterized ECM proteins during the process of caudal fin regeneration in zebrafish. Our results show that a transi...
